Formed by an international bunch of movie enthusiasts back in 2009, the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) is now the largest archive of its kind, and houses more than six thousand 35mm film prints and trailers at its depository in Austin, Texas.
“Dedicated to the awareness of important genre movies through collection, conservation, and distribution”, AGFA’s focus lies with the exploitation era of independent cinema that ran from the 1960s through to the 1980s. The archive boasts some of the most obscure and insane films in cinema history. But they are fragile, and in danger of being lost forever.
This is a Kickstarter project that will be of particular interest to horror fans; AGFA are looking to purchase a 4K film scanner to digitally transfer titles from the infamous Something Weird collection, as well as one-of-a-kind obscurities from the AGFA archive before they wear out. Thanks to their 200+ backers, they are already half way to reaching their goal.
