India Launches Rocket to Mars

India has successfully launched its first ever space mission to Mars, highlighting the country’s ambition to become a budget player in the ongoing global space race. 

The rocket, which is expected to travel for 300 days and is carrying the unmanned Mars Orbiter, launched from the Satish Dhawan space centre on the east coast of India at 9am GMT. The following video, courtesy of The Guardian, shows the rocket taking off:
