12 Road Signs You Won’t Find in the Highway Code

By -

The day I passed my driving test was without doubt one of the most liberating days of my life. I’m not ashamed to say it was my third attempt, because I’ve known several people who were unsuccessful the first time round, and just gave up trying. I was determined. I had put my poor driving instructor through years of tears, tantrums and profanities. And, come to think of it, some truly hair-raising moments. How could I let him down?

Thankfully, I didn’t have to. A handful of minors later, my instructor – who was probably more relieved than I was – drove me home. And my parents’ all too familiar ‘hope for the best, prepare for the worst’ expressions quickly lifted into smiles.

I’ll never forget the gift my dad gave me before setting off on my first 160-mile drive to visit my boyfriend in the West Midlands. It was an A3 road map of the UK. A primitive sat nav, if you like. Great if you have someone in the passenger seat, but not ideal when you’re on your own. I could see where he was coming from. He was worried my Tom Tom would send me in the wrong direction, into a lake, or worse still, off of a cliff! I assured him that modern GPS technology was reliable, but if I was in any doubt whilst driving, I would allow the road signs to guide me.

It does beg the question, though. How many of us pay attention to every single warning sign we encounter whilst behind the wheel? I mean, our sat navs give us a wealth of information down to the exact locations of speed cameras. Surely GPS systems of the not-too-distant-future will warn us of narrow roads, level crossings and deer, rendering physical road signs nothing more than roadside clutter.

The team at My Safety Sign have scoured the internet in search of the funniest and absurdly obvious warning signs from around the world. With the exception of the ‘crab crossing’ notice, I’m not sure any of these would make it onto a future generation sat nav. Are you?
