German photographer Sebastian Erras has travelled to some of the most beautiful cities in the world; Paris, Vienna, and Rome to name a few. And while the vast majority of lens-wielding tourists would choose to spend their visit documenting architectural delights or fascinating locals, Erras, quite conversely, favours just one perspective – down. The point he’s making, and rightly so, is that we’re all so busy looking up and around, that we fail to notice what’s right under our feet.
Erras was recently invited to photograph the beautifully intricate tiled floors of Barcelona by Elizabet Martínez, co-creator of mosaic-mad Instagram page Tile Addiction. Some of the floors are real treasures, and could be easily overlooked by those heeding advice to crane their necks and gaze at what stands above them.
Many people have remarked upon Erras’ penchant for coordinating his shoes with the floors he photographs, some noting that it was a little distracting and diverted their attention away from the intended subject. Although the inclusion of his feet are only meant to give scale to the tiles, he has pared down the range of footwear for this most recent trip.
Sebastian Erras’ website exhibits a range of photographs, including ghostly fine art shots of motion-blurred trees and documentation of vintage cars in Cuba. His Instagram success shows the appeal of specialism. What could have been an account filled with pictures of the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe has found a new viewpoint in these bird’s eye shots of mosaic floors.

Amazing. I genuinely have done this myself…I love floor work and foot shots (well shoes). Not on this scale, just in my personal pics.
