Zim & Zou’s Whimsical Wonderland is a Feast for the Eyes

By -

If you’re a regular visitor to Visual Broadcast, you’ll know we’re huge fans of papercraft, and you just might recall an article I wrote back in May 2016 presenting twelve of the very best papercraft artists from around the world. Now, I hadn’t intended on featuring quite so many, but with such an array of beautiful paper creations decorating the internet, I had to draw the line somewhere. With that said, I’m fully aware that there are some extremely talented artists out there deserving of a mention, if not more. This one’s for you, Zim & Zou.

Zim & Zou are Thibault Zimmermann and Lucie Thomas, a pair of papercraft extraordinaires based in Nancy, France. Both studied graphic design and it was this that served as a precursor to the passion for paper they demonstrate today. Their focus is on handcrafting installations using tangible materials, and despite having a wealth of computer-aided design experience between them, they execute every aspect of their pieces by hand.

Visiting Zim & Zou’s website is like walking into a sweet shop – colours so vibrant, they make your mouth water. And you don’t know which project to delve into first because each and every one looks incredible. A glance at their client list, and it seems some of the biggest companies in the world have been blown away, too. They mention Hermès, IBM, Microsoft, and TIME, to name a few. Zim & Zou’s latest commission for Hermès is astounding. A brand new store in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates calls for a window display that is nothing short of showstopping. And my goodness, did this talented pair deliver! See for yourselves:

The skills required to create intricate pieces such as these cannot be mastered overnight. However, more of us than ever are being enticed to pick up the scalpel and have a go. I admire anyone with the patience and level of precision we’ve come to expect from seasoned papercraft artists, and will continue to marvel in the magnificence of their creations. If you would like to see more from Zim & Zou, head over to Facebook or Instagram.
