Anna Kövecses is a Hungarian-born graphic designer living in sunny Cyprus. She spends her days creating cheerful editorial illustrations using simplified collage techniques and a warm, friendly colour palette. With subject matter including boats, cats and birds, it’s easy to see where this self-taught creative finds the inspiration for her delightful pieces – the small seaside village in which she resides is a beautiful spot, and would instil happiness in even the most jaded among us.
Kövecses crafts an amiable stylish aesthetic from a combination of unaffected naivety and an intuitive visual panache. These are cheering images that raise a smile and portray a simpler, more beautiful world. One in which everything has a place – a comfortable, light space that is both jolly and slightly wistful. You might assume her work is aimed primarily at a young audience, but her varied commissions for clients such as The BBC, The Guardian, and The New York Times show us that her style has universal appeal, reaching far beyond the scope of children’s illustration.
